SciWrench policies

Clear rules.
No fine-print maze.

SciWrench is an independent home for free interactive science-learning tools. These policies explain how the platform approaches privacy, educational use, scientific accuracy, intellectual property, third-party services, and institutional independence.

1. About SciWrench

SciWrench is an independent platform for interactive science learning. Its tools are designed to help curious minds explore, experiment, analyze, and understand scientific ideas through active use rather than passive consumption.

The platform may include simulations, visualizations, guided activities, data-analysis tools, practice environments, and other educational resources across different areas of science.

2. Privacy

SciWrench is designed to minimize collection of personal information. Unless a specific tool clearly states otherwise, SciWrench learning tools do not require users to create an account or intentionally submit personal information to use their core educational features.

Like most websites, the hosting and network infrastructure used to deliver SciWrench may automatically process limited technical information necessary to serve pages, maintain security, diagnose problems, and prevent abuse. This can include information such as IP address, browser or device details, request timing, and similar connection metadata.

SciWrench does not sell personal information and does not intentionally build advertising profiles from learning activity.

3. Local data and exported files

Some SciWrench tools may temporarily store progress, preferences, answers, generated datasets, or other working information in the user's browser or device. When possible, this information is kept locally rather than transmitted to SciWrench.

Tools may also allow users to generate or download files such as PDFs, images, tables, or datasets. Files created locally become the user's responsibility once saved to their device or shared elsewhere.

Users should avoid entering sensitive, confidential, medical, institutional, or personally identifying information into educational tools unless a tool explicitly states that such information is expected and explains how it is handled.

4. Cookies and analytics

SciWrench aims to keep tracking to a minimum. The platform does not use advertising cookies or behavioral advertising systems as part of its educational purpose.

Essential browser storage, security mechanisms, or infrastructure-level analytics may be used where needed to operate, protect, or improve the site. If SciWrench later introduces a service that materially changes how visitor information is collected or analyzed, this policy will be updated accordingly.

5. Educational purpose

SciWrench tools are provided for learning, teaching, exploration, and demonstration. They are not substitutes for professional scientific, medical, clinical, engineering, legal, safety, or regulatory advice.

Instructors may use SciWrench as a teaching aid, but they remain responsible for determining whether a tool is appropriate for their learners, curriculum, accessibility requirements, assessment design, and local institutional policies.

6. Scientific accuracy and simulation limits

SciWrench aims to present scientifically accurate concepts and calculations. However, educational tools often simplify complex biological, chemical, physical, statistical, or environmental systems so that specific principles can be explored clearly.

Simulated outcomes should therefore be interpreted as educational models, not as predictions of every real-world system. Errors can also occur in software, explanatory text, datasets, or calculations.

For high-stakes work, users should verify important results against appropriate primary literature, trusted reference sources, validated software, or professional guidance.

7. AI-assisted development

Artificial intelligence tools may be used during the development of SciWrench for tasks such as drafting code, exploring design ideas, generating development assets, troubleshooting, or assisting with explanatory content.

AI-assisted material is not treated as scientifically authoritative simply because it was generated by an AI system. Scientific concepts, calculations, educational logic, and tool behavior should be reviewed and tested as part of development.

8. Free access

SciWrench's educational tools are intended to remain freely accessible to learners, educators, and curious users. Access to a tool does not create a contractual educational service, guarantee continued availability, or guarantee that a particular tool will remain unchanged indefinitely.

9. Intellectual property and permitted use

Unless a specific resource states otherwise, the SciWrench website, software interfaces, original graphics, written content, branding, and interactive tools are protected by applicable intellectual-property rights.

You are welcome to:

  • use SciWrench tools for personal learning;
  • use them during classroom teaching, demonstrations, workshops, and other educational activities;
  • link directly to SciWrench tools or pages; and
  • show SciWrench on a screen or in teaching materials when identifying the source.

Unless a specific license says otherwise, you may not:

  • copy and republish an entire SciWrench tool as your own website or product;
  • remove SciWrench branding and redistribute the tool as if it were independently created;
  • sell, sublicense, or commercially repackage SciWrench software or content;
  • use SciWrench branding in a way that implies sponsorship, endorsement, partnership, or institutional affiliation that does not exist.

Individual tools or resources may later be released under separate licenses. When that happens, the license shown with that resource governs its permitted reuse.

10. Third-party services and links

SciWrench may rely on third-party infrastructure or may link to external websites, publications, datasets, software, or services. External services operate under their own terms and privacy practices.

A link from SciWrench does not automatically mean that SciWrench endorses every statement, product, policy, or practice of the linked service.

11. Institutional independence

SciWrench is independently developed and operated. Unless explicitly stated on a specific page or project, SciWrench is not operated by, affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any university, school, employer, government agency, scientific society, company, or other institution.

References to scientific publications, organisms, software, educational practices, institutions, or external resources are provided for context and do not by themselves create an affiliation or endorsement relationship.

12. Availability and limitation of liability

SciWrench is provided on an ā€œas availableā€ basis. Tools may be updated, corrected, redesigned, temporarily unavailable, or retired as the platform evolves.

To the extent permitted by applicable law, SciWrench makes no guarantee that every tool will always be error-free, uninterrupted, suitable for a particular purpose, or compatible with every browser, device, institutional network, or accessibility setup.

Users remain responsible for how they apply information, outputs, simulations, downloaded files, and results produced through SciWrench.

13. Changes to these policies

These policies may change as SciWrench adds new tools, infrastructure, or capabilities. Material changes will be reflected on this page, and the ā€œLast updatedā€ date will be revised.

14. Questions or concerns

Questions about these policies, scientific content, accessibility, copyright, or a particular SciWrench tool can be directed through the contact method published on the SciWrench website.

Privacy concern? Please include the tool or page involved and enough detail to investigate the issue.
Found a scientific error? Corrections are welcome. Include the relevant concept, result, or source when possible.
